Personal Development: satisfaction, wellbeing and performance

April 2, 2024

If I pronounce the word Psychology and then make a brief pause, more than one often goes through the head endless complications arising from the pathological conception that we all have in mind, based on the absence of mental health linked everlasting, to the pair that erroneously, to the mentioned field.

In a positive sense, that is, in the development of mental capacities that favor the proper functioning of our thoughts , feelings and behaviors, it is usual to resort to another type of recently coined terms such as the controversial concept of coaching, as if this technique did not have a close relationship with the fundamental objectives of positive psychology.

And is that each of us have a machine, perhaps the most powerful of all dare I say, which fortunately or unfortunately we do not have the instruction manual on its operation. We only start from the base of an eminently common hardware, whose software we are developing throughout life through the acquisition of vital experiences and learning that ultimately determine our functional capacities.

Beliefs: reality or science fiction?

There are numerous examples that can be drawn from the cinematographic context in this sense. Anyone who boasts will be able to remember how Will Smith helped develop his seduction skills to his clients in the "Hitch" movie. Or how Lionel Logue did the same when it came to overcoming the stuttering that caused the Duke Jorge de York, speaking in public in the film "The King's speech".

Something less known to the public in its version of the big screen, may be "The peaceful warrior" based on the autobiographical novel by Dan Milman, in which a mystic Nick Nolte, incarnating the "teacher" Socrátes, collaborated in the learnings Scott Mechiowicz (Dan) to develop "the suspension of incessant mental dialogue, the abandonment of the ego and the experience of living fully in the present moment".

Similarly, it is common to find popular belief based on the stability and permanence of certain psychological characteristics, exemplified perfectly in expressions such as "I am like this" or "I have always behaved in this way". As if our interpretations, judgments or beliefs were determined in series, in an innate way, in terms of "you have or you do not have", without addressing the possibility of development. Something that, on the other hand, happens with each new learning or experience that modifies our associations and neural connections. In itself, the very belief of psychological change already opens the door for him to happen .

To achieve these changes effectively, we find a series of necessary steps to be able to carry them out successfully. The first and perhaps most difficult of them, would be to learn to be taken less seriously, when considering ourselves as a reliable source of knowledge, since as a rule, we are all subject to changes in our emotional states that affect our criteria of interpretation over time, may develop true barbarities in the form of belief, about ourselves or our capabilities.

Being able to resist frequently the opinions or beliefs of others with whom we disagree, we find it more difficult to do the same with the ones we develop ourselves, making good the maxim of "if I think about it, it will be because it is true" .

Overcoming for personal development

Another fundamental step needed to move forward, would be the willingness to abandon our old and dysfunctional beliefs, like the child who refuses to let go of his old toys with which he barely enjoys.

And it is not so much about analyzing the "why" or the veracity / falsity of our approaches , as to change our criteria of analysis by others based more on the "for what" or attending to the utility / uselessness that certain thoughts provide us in a more practical sense, when it comes to achieving our goals of change.

Overcoming this first phase of change involves developing initially the insecurity of those who thought they were walking on solid ground and discovered in swampy terrain. However, the illusion and motivation provided by the desired change justifies the initial state of uncertainty more than enough.

With UPAD Psychology and Coaching, achieving new challenges is possible thanks to their personal development processes. The work of beliefs will be fundamental to confront with guarantees those new changes that allow the client to achieve high levels of satisfaction, well-being and performance.
