Destiny: an animated short film about the here and now

April 25, 2024

Destiny is an animated short film by four students from the French school Bellecour Ecoles d'art. The story sends a powerful message from an impossible that, even being magical, proposes an intelligent reflection on how we live in the moment.

It poses different aspects that can help us enjoy the present more fully.

A short film that invites us to reflect on the present moment

With the following story, the team of Psychological and Psychiatric Assistance Institute Mensalus opens an interesting reflection on how to live the here and now.

First of all, you can watch the video below:

The short shows a range of magic options. How can we understand this message?

History raises a wide repertoire of impossibilities, it is true, but we can understand them as metaphors that promote changes in different vital aspects.

The outcome is a clear example. The fact of stop looking at the clock and take a breath to appreciate the day allows the character to end the "control to live" and gives way to "live to control." Likewise, the short shows on several occasions the possibility of "stopping time". With this message the authors invite us to do a STOP to reflect, that is, to leave a space to think instead of facing the day with the automatic pilot.

It is revealing when the protagonist can see himself in slow motion. What metaphor do we extract from this moment?

Seeing reality in slow motion is a way to materialize something as abstract as the ability to analyze. By this we mean a more objective analysis, an exploration from a position far from the self-critical voice and from which we elaborate positive-realistic thoughts.

How many times have we reached a constructive conclusion once we have distanced ourselves from the conflict? The most functional options are born as a result of this exercise. Likewise, connecting with objectivity can also go hand in hand with asking for external help and sharing the concern.

We all look for moments in which to breathe, contemplate a ray of light, take distance, etc. However, we do not always find them ...

True. This has a lot to do with operating under pressure. The feeling of "I do not get to everything" and "I must be able" sometimes increases self-demanding thoughts and leaves individual needs aside. The metaphorical act of taking a breath can justly respond to this contact with one's own need.

On the other hand, "breathing" is sometimes just that, breathing. In that moment when we focus our attention on taking a breath and letting it go, we slow down the demanding thought and leave space for thought free of charge.

Mental permissiveness is what then derives from a healthy request: rest, drink coffee without haste, sit and enjoy the landscape, contemplate and observe the details, perceive information that, with the automatic pilot, you do not perceive. Taking a breath is a manifestation of our right to stop and feel.

The protagonist lets go of time control. In general, is it easy for us to "let go"?

This is one of the great topics that we work on in Psychotherapy and Coaching: letting go of responsibilities that do not belong to us, letting go of functions that once belonged to us but have now lost meaning, letting go of thoughts that blame us, letting go of primitive emotions, letting go go prejudices, etc.

We cling to what we know and, sometimes, we find the change complicated due to fear of how we will feel in the new context.

With what message can we stay from "Destiny"?

Destiny ultimately proposes an intelligent reflection on how we live in the moment. Many times fate is explained as something that "is already written", that we can not change. This short film raises different aspects that can help us to live the here and now with greater fullness and thus predict a balanced future.

Having said that, we launched a message:

"How I manage my vital moment will affect how I live that moment and the future moments".

Maybe we can not know what the future holds, but it is in our hands to ask what resources we believe will facilitate the way for us.

In the same way, we remember the importance of seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting. It is worth putting the five senses in what we do if our goal is to experience it from satisfaction. To do it to feel it there is a good stretch. This is the difference between living time and letting it happen.
